Life and Death of Berserk’s author Kentaro Miura Part 2 of 4
“In this world, is the destiny of mankind controlled by some transcendental entity or law? Is it like the hand of God hovering above? At least, it is true that man has no control, even over his own will.” -Berserk Anime Intro
The manga Berserk by Kentarō Miura (7/11/1966-5/6/2021) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura. A work of art so compelling that it seems almost drawn by a divine hand, according to critics and fans worldwide.
Set in a medieval Europe-inspired dark fantasy world, the story centers on the characters of Guts, a lone mercenary, and Griffith, the leader of a mercenary band called the "Band of the Hawk". During the Eclipse Griffith activated his Crimson Beherit, triggering the Eclipse harvesting ritual and sacrificing the Band of the Hawk, in exchange for becoming the fifth God Hand angel Femto.
Beherits are not rendered null after activation. An owner's desperate desire for life may reactivate a beherit, therefore summoning the God Hand and permitting the owner to offer another sacrifice in exchange for new life.
Baʿal Berith ("Lord of the Covenant") and El Berith ("God of the Covenant") are two gods, worshiped in Shechem, in ancient Canaan, according to the Bible. The term for "covenant" (Hebrew bərīt) appears also in Ugaritic texts (second millennium BCE) as brt, in connection with Baʿal, and perhaps as Beruth in Sanchuniathon's work. The Hebrew term Berith it was originated from the Akkanadian (Babylonian) word 'Biritu' which means to 'fetter' or 'to bond'. Baal Berith was a form of Baal worshiped in Berith (Beirut), Phoenicia. He is also called Beal, Berithi, Bofry, Bolfry and Bolfri by necromancers. In Alchemy Berith was the element with which all metals could be transmuted into gold.
Judges 8:33
And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel again went astray after the Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.
The idol Baʿal Berith, which the Jews worshipped after the death of Gideon, was identical, according to the Rabbis, with Baʿal Zebub, "the lord of flies," the god of Ekron (2 Kings 1:2). He was worshipped in the shape of a fly; and Jewish tradition states that so addicted were the Jews to his cult that they would carry an image of him in their pockets, producing it, and kissing it from time to time. Baʿal Zebub is called Baʿal Berith because such Jews might be said to make a covenant (Hebrew: berith) of devotion with the idol, being unwilling to part with it for a single moment (Shab. 83b; comp. also Sanh. 63b). According to another conception, Baʿal Berith was an obscene article of idolatrous worship, possibly a simulacrum priapi (Yer. Shab. ix. 11d; 'Ab. Zarah iii. 43a). This is based on the later significance of the word "berit," meaning the Jewish rite of circumcision performed on a male child on the eighth day of his life.
Beherit is the Syriac word for Satan.

The main antagonist of the series is the God Hand, a quintumvirate of demon sovereigns who act as executors of the Idea of Evil's will, by virtue of their desires being intrinsic to the entity. As the most powerful of demonkind, they reign over apostles as their masters, and are responsible for granting normal beherit bearers their reincarnated status of being, in exchange for a sacrifice. They have orchestrated many significant events that have largely affected the course of humanity, as well as the state of the macrocosm.
Each member of the God Hand was once human and is a previous owner of the Crimson Beherit, which distinguished them as individuals destined to be reborn as the demon sovereigns they currently serve as Angels of Desire in 216 (6 x 6 x 6) year increments, they each attained their proper forms during the festival known as the Eclipse.
The God’s Hand appears during the Eclipse an event that occurs every 216 years in which the gates of hell are opened and demons consume in an orgy of blood and flesh of those who have the Mark of The Sacrifices on them.
